It's that time of year -- the 2009 Real Travels calendar is finally available! Sorry for the delay, but if you order it this week on CafePress, you should receive it before the end of this year.

    the thrill of victory
The biggest sporting event in the world is a great excuse to see the world. Every two years, the Olympics set down in another country, giving you a chance for travel and to take part in history.

This summer's games in Beijing, China, were controversial but spectacular -- and our friend Dave Lavell was there.

We interviewed him about his experience in China and at other Olympic Games he's attended (and planning to see).

So tune into this audio podcast for an Olympic-sized adventure, whether you're a fan of summer or winter sports or you just love to hear about unique travels.

    Tolkien travels
Fans of the Lord of the Rings books and movies must make a pilgrimage to Matamata to see J.R.R. Tolkien's Hobbiton come alive.

This last remaining movie set is as perfectly picturesque as the mythical Shire, home to Bilbo, Frodo, Sam, and furry-footed friends.

And it's all tucked away in the center of New Zealand's north island. Join the fellowship, and see for yourself in our latest video podcast.

    sea the life
With snow-capped mountains on one side and a sandy beach on the other, Kaikoura, New Zealand, is a real meeting-place of diverse landscapes.

And this isn't just above the waves either -- the tiny peninsula sits at the edge of a continental shelf where currents meet and bring rich nutrients up from the ocean floor.

That's why so many dolphins, seals, whales, and sea birds congregate here. Along with fans of sea creatures, wine, and tasty seafood.

Our latest video episod visits Kaikoura (by way of California's Half Moon Bay, another great spot for ocean life). Dive in!

    pack it up!
Leavin' on a jetplane is a lot tougher these days because airlines are nickel-and-diming passengers, thanks to rising fuel costs.

The latest fee? Baggage. Checking a second bag costs $25 on most airlines, and now American Airlines charges $15 for checking the first bag. You can bet that other carriers will follow.

So tune into our audio podcast for tips on planning a compact, yet stylish, travel wardrobe that might possibly fit into the overhead bin.

What opera house actually has an opera written about it?

None other than the amazing Sydney Opera House, perhaps the most unusual performing arts space on the planet.

Perched in Port Jackson on the edge of Australia, this highly modern building has become a symbol of the whole country. Take a look in our latest episode.

    the word on winter travel
Don't let a little rain or snow keep you from the best travel deals to European capitals. The exchange rate may be high, but the dollar stretches farther in the off-season. Plus, the museums and restaurants are less crowded, but just as worth seeing.

Listen to our new audio podcast for tips on winter travel, plus a little news and chat. We're going to alternate between video and audio-only episodes for a while, so let us know what you think!

    the garden isle
Want a Hawaiian vacation that's off the beaten track? Try Kauai, where you won't find high-rise hotels and crowds of over-baked tourists.

This is the only island without a road ringing the whole way 'round, and buildings are no taller than a palm tree. Kauai is for nature lovers and people who want a taste of small-town island life.

Check out our latest podcast for a glimpse of Kauai's mountains, waterfalls, and laid-back atmosphere.

    the real queen of Egypt
You may have heard of Cleopatra or Nefertiti, but do you know about the Egyptian queen who built an enormous temple out of the side of a mountain?

Hatshepsut was probably the most powerful woman to ever rule Egypt. Ok, she had to wear a beard to do it, but her massive monument more than makes up for that. Check it out in our latest episode and on the T&T's Real Travels in Egypt DVD.

    crystal clear
Ever look at a fine cut-crystal wine glass and wonder how it was made? Well, if you're holding a piece of Waterford crystal, that glass was blown and cut by hand by skilled artisans in Ireland.

On the cusp on the millennium, shortly before our wedding, we toured the Waterford Crystal Factory and saw how our toasting flutes were going to be created.

Pour yourself some bubbly and watch the latest podcast to see the glass in action!

    bizarre bazaar
If you love to shop, Cairo's Khan-al-Khalili is a wonderland of exotic treasures. But some Americans are nervous about haggling for the best price when things aren't marked and bargaining is part of a different culture.

In this week's podcast, we share shopping tips and tell you how to get a good price for those lovely handicrafts. We also wander the backstreets of the souks and pick up some Egyptian amber.

    Aloha & Italy
Strange combo, eh? We're a little late posting this week's podcast because we're on vacation with the family in Kauai, Hawaii.

We're filming some new podcasts here on the Garden Isle, but in the meantime, check out a preview of our new T&T's Real Travels in Italy DVD with this week's clip about San Gimignano in gorgeous Tuscany.
